# Geek Pocket Watch

\$85.00

## For the Gentleman Geek

An age-old problem that has plagued the mathematical community for years: how can I show off what a genius I am and still look devilishly handsome?

Fear not my fellow geeks. With this old-school gold-plated brass pocket watch featuring the equivalent notations of all the numerals, you're sure to look smart and stylish.

Cheat Sheet (included with each watch):
1 - Legendre's constant is a mathematical constant occurring in a formula conjectured by Adrien-Marie Legendre to capture the asymptotic behavior of the prime-counting function. Its value is now known to be exactly 1.
2 - A joke in the math world: An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one orders a beer. The second orders half a beer. The third, a quarter of a beer. The bartender says, "You're all idiots," and pours two beers.
3 - A unicode character XML "numeric character reference."
4 - Modular arithmetic, also known as clock arithmetic, is a system of arithmetic for integers, where numbers "wrap around" after they reach a certain value. The modular multiplicative inverse of 2 (mod 7) is the integer /a/ such that 2*/a/ is congruent to 1 modulo 7.
5 - The Golden Mean...reworked a little.
6 - Three factorial (3*2*1=6)
7 - A repeating decimal that is proven to be exactly equal to 7 with Cauchy's Convergence Test.
8 - Graphical representation of binary code.
9 - An example of a base-4 number, which uses the digits 0, 1, 2 and 3 to represent any real number.
10 - A Binomial Coefficient, also known as the choose function. 5 choose 2 is equal to 5! divided by (2!*(5-2)!)
11 A hexadecimal, or base-16, number.

Made in China. Standard watch battery included. Exclusively at UncommonGoods.

Fun watch for geeks

By

from Upstate NY

Pros

• Unique

Cons

This is definitely a fun watch - my family spent hours trying to explain all the different representations for the numbers - some we understood and some really took a bit of research (e.g., the "modular multiplicative inverse"). I collect pocket watches and I have to disagree with those who describe this one as a cheap gum-ball machine watch. It isn't a Swiss Army Watch, but it isn't cheap, either. I would say that it is overpriced for what you get. But my husband was happy to get it for me as a gift and I am happy to show it off to friends and family.

This is going to a Christmas gift for my boyfriend! He loves math and has been hinting towards wanting a pocket watch for awhile now. I stumbled across this site by accident, but I'm so happy I found it! I hope I can hold out until Christmas to give it to him! I know he's going to love it. Despite the other reviews of a "gumball" product, I was pleasantly surprised. The heft is good. Not too bulky.. the coloring isn't really my taste, but I'm sure my boyfriend will get a lot of use out of it.

Delivery was quick and easy! I got an email the same day as ordering it, telling me it had shipped. And I received it about a day and a half later. I am completely satisfied with all aspects of this site and the people that work for it.

Pros

• Good Watch Mechanics
• Looks great

Cons

• Feels Cheap thin

Best Uses

My boyfriend loved the Geek Pocket Watch, but would have prefered it in silver. I thought it was a great idea but was a bit dissappointed with the percieved quality upon receiving it. The watch feels "light" and "cheap" and in retrospect I wouldn't have spend [\$] on it. I feel it's a great idea, and great piece, but is not worth [\$].

This was a great gift. I got it as graduation gift for someone who was a math major, and he LOVED it! But, the case was very cheaply made and almost looked like those toys you get from a candy ball machine. I was disappointed in its quality. But the idea of it was great and the person totally loved getting it.

I collect pocket watches. This was a unique product however the outer casing is of common design. Disappointing. I enjoy the conversational comments when showing this piece to fellow mathematicians. We all chuckle about it, and some comment "what a nifty little piece." All in all, it's an OK little pocket watch.
