Even if you can't ride upon a camel through the majestic Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan, with this painterly, hand-felted wool blanket you can transport your home to this beautiful country through the artwork of its people. These heartfelt illustrations are rendered using a unique needle felting technique by Kyrgyz tailors through the aid of Gulnara Kydyrmyshova, an entrepreneurial local artisan who has helped revive and bring attention to the distinctive handicraft of this recently-independent nation and its people. Using this special process, dyed wool fibers sourced from local sheep are fused to create imaginative images representing religious and culturally relevant structures along the Great Silk Road. A yurt—a portable, bent wood-framed dwelling structure traditionally used by Turkic nomads in the steppes of Central Asia—is set against a turquoise and violet structure that can evoke a temple, mosque, cathedral, or palace that provides an imaginative backdrop for the lush pastureland traversed by roaming camels. Each warm, one-of-a-kind throw helps enrich the lives of these nomadic artisans and brings whimsy, warmth, and an exotic touch wherever it's displayed.
