Words of a Feather

Let your writing take flight with this extraordinary pen. Created by artist Kevin Smolark, the bubble-like tube of hand-blown glass encases a single, dappled pheasant feather. The pen is light, with naturally occurring curves that feel comfortable in the hand. The standard, ballpoint ink cartridge is easily replaceable, so your words will never be grounded for long. Smolark uses only found feathers that have been naturally molted. Handmade in Philadelphia.

Kevin Smolark

Glass cannot be shaped with use of the hands, but rather manipulated with an idea, this is what attracts Kevin more than anything. Both form and function play a role in making a non-functional material into functional wares. The feeling of helplessness toward a medium impels him to find a way of being creative. The fragility as well as the strength of glass relates to the human being, as we are sensitive material. Kevin Smolark's glass blowing career began in 1999 at Salem County Community College. collection
