earthenware reversible necklacesby Eric Hendrick and Noelle VanHendrick
- the story
Keep The Peace
The work of potters Eric Hendrick and Noelle VanHendrick comes full circle as they shift their focus from sculptural accent pieces and functional food and drinkware to handcrafting enchanting wearable art. Each O-shaped pendant is molded out of earthenware that is glazed and high-fired in one of three striking colors: water, lilac, or cherry. On the unfinished underside is one of three heartfelt phrases carved into the clay before it's placed in the kiln: "peace in = peace out," "breathe gratitude," or "love around surround."
Your choice of poetic utterance can be displayed outwardly to remind those around you find inner calm, or it can stay pressed against your skin and flipped up when you need a small reminder to breathe, meditate, and reflect. Each sculpted piece is suspended from a nylon wrapped steel cord and joined with an easy-to-fasten screw clasp. Handmade in Vermont. Sold individually.

Eric Hendrick and Noelle VanHendrick
As newlyweds, Eric and Noelle decided to pursue their artistic passion, and put all of their gift money toward buying red clay for their handmade creations. Unfortunately, the clay they received didn't perform like it was supposed to. "It was bad," says Noelle. "We couldn't attach spouts or handles, and glazes wouldn't stick! We were bummed." Fortunately, the two carried on and have continued to share their gift for joyful ceramics.
Looking for solutions to their red clay dilemma, the couple dreamed up new ways to approach their craft by watching Tim Burton movies. "[We were] watching The Nightmare Before Christmas and bang! Clay Jack O' Lanterns without glazes [or] attachments [were born]." The duo had so much success with their charming Halloween lanterns that they bought more red clay--with a plan, this time--and sprung a patch of clay pumpkins as the hallmark of their collection.
"That was over 10 years ago," she said. "Lesson learned: Sometimes you must be crafty to get things done." collection
