Ancient Artistry
At the age of 17, George Hadjipopov fled Communist Bulgaria and settled in the United States. Thirty years later, when the Communist regime fell, he began using his skills as an entrepreneur to help lift Bulgarians out of intense poverty by bringing their little-known cultural craftsmanship to the world.
This remarkable, handmade pitcher is crafted in Bulgaria from local, red clay, which is visible in the handle and interior. The rich coloring is added with a liquid clay solution called engobe. Artisans create the intricate striped design by turning the pitcher on a wheel as they apply thin lines of the colored engobe. After the colored pot is fired, a glaze is applied to produce a polished finish, and it is fired a second time.
The resulting pitcher is sturdy enough for everyday use, while its striking beauty retains an air of the exotic.
