Earth, Glaze & Fire

Artist Ellen Evans works with a vision. She believes that the practical objects we use every day can be works of art, bringing uncommon beauty into our lives. That's why, working in her studio in Astoria, NY, she handcrafts beautiful, ceramic tableware that is as functional as it is artistic.

This oblong platter makes a beautiful backdrop for a selection of fruits and cheeses, or becomes an eye-catching centerpiece as it serves a savory main dish. Even when it's not in use, the platter's rich colors and intricate pattern and textures make it worth keeping on display.

The patterns are created by overlaying each handmade, ceramic platter with a piece of zebra print fabric or polka dot lace, and painting them with blue, brown or black liquid porcelain. The fabric is then removed, leaving a reverse image that is unique for each piece. Finally, the ceramic is kiln-fired twice, resulting in a dish that is durable and dishwasher safe.

Each handmade piece is dated with the current year. For a special wedding present, the names of the bride and groom can be added as well, creating a one-of-a-kind keepsake that will be treasured each time it is used.

With the ability to customize orders with patterns, names and the current year, Evans allows customers to make a truly personal connection to her handmade stoneware pieces. Each functional work of art is hand-kilned at very high temperatures, making it sturdy and dependable, before being painted with liquid porcelain through textiles and lace for exquisite patterns that are unique to each object. According to Evans, "I'm always searching for lace and interesting textiles in antique shops and markets. Over the last ten years I have developed a method for painting patterns to achieve a trompe l'oeil effect-the idea of working with textures in a new way is exciting."
