Tina Tang
Tina Tang is a jewelry designer who loves to make stuff with her hands. Oh, and she also loves handbags, pecan pie, opera, and techies.
Hailing from the suburbs of Maryland from Chinese immigrant parents who wanted her to be a scientist, doctor or something "responsible" that guaranteed a paycheck. Being the good girl that she was, Tina did what her mom and dad wanted, got a college degree from the University of Chicago and went to work in finance as an equities trader. Five years later, after feeling like her soul was shriveling, Tina left her job and returned to her first instinct and love: making stuff with her hands.
That's how Tina Tang Jewelry came to life. She makes all her jewelry in New York City. See
all creations.

This person designs but does not do the casting. I don't like that.

@kerry have you ever done metalsmithing? casting requires a lot of specialized equipment and a specific skill set. Most small scale jewelers do not have the resources to do their own casting, especially once they get to a level of production that would be required for a business as large as Uncommon Goods.lovely work, Tina!

Tiffany had (not sure if they still do) necklaces with just an initial in a similar style and their asking price was about the same.

I have basically this same exact thing in 4 different types/colors of metal saying 'joy', 'love', 'peach' and my name, from different places, none of which cost more than $30. This is WAY common and far too expensive.

Paloma Picasso's Tiffany line ...

Not terribly unusual, though I like the idea. It's just too expensive for a piece of costume jewelry. I would pay, maybe. $40.

The lettering is a little lumpy - looks like it might break easily if caught on something?

Everyone needs a little reminder to allow more Joy in their lives..... I like the styling of the letters and it has a good price as well.

Hi! This is Tina Tang, the designer. Thank you SO much for all your comments. All feedback is great feedback. I just wanted to address some questions issues brought up.@Kerry - Most designers do not do their own casting; it's not economical unless you are a big name big department store designer (non UnCommon Goods). It also wastes energy and space to buy all that casting equipment for just one little designer. I prefer to give business to a local small casting company, also family owned.@LJ - I had no intention of copying Tiffany's. ln fact, I had no idea they even had word jewelry. I am so sorry you thought I tried to copy them. Copying is no fun as a designer.@Sarah - when a designer makes something in the US, it's impossible to make it retail for $30 if it's made of real sterling silver. Silver has hit near all time highs in 2011. And, I like to pay Americans to make the jewelry which means $30-$40 necklaces are impossible. I prefer to make things in real materials and not fake stuff that falls apart later. My goal is to design jewelry that lasts, made of materials that have true intrinsic value, and to make it all here in the USA.

Just doesn't appeal to me, there are so many name necklaces out there that this isn't that unique.

Beautiful! I like the simplicity of it. I agree that it is not terribly unique or uncommon, but pretty nonetheless. Also, I have to agree that it is out of my price range for this type of jewelry.

Pretty, but very common and priced too high

Who says it has to be smooth to be a great piece of jewelry? Isn't that a personal preference and take away from the uniqueness of a designer? I have an initial necklace in a similar style from here that for the last 7-ish years I have gotten nothing but compliments on. Also great customer service.
