Karissa Harvey is an emerging artist from Farmingdale, New Jersey. She works in oils and glazes to create colorful, large scale portraits and scenes with scattered focal points and a slightly blurred sense of reality. Her paintings are based on gesture, with a loose and almost accidental undertone, and then brought to focus here and there,, allowing the viewer to weave in and out of pockets of clarity. This scattered abstraction gives her images a sense of energy or movement, while simultaneously achieving a peaceful stillness.
An eye-catching time capsule, this lively piece is a collaboration between artist Karissa Ann Harvey and her great grandfather, who she never met. Inspired by everyday people, her great grandfather snapped photos of unsuspecting passersby along the Jersey Shore and Coney Island. These photos existed only in memory and stories for Karissa, until they were found years later.
Intrigued by the photos' keen aesthetic feel, she began converting the secretive black and whites into vibrant painted portraits that are equal parts art and voyeur. In this work, we see a couple strolling a crowded boardwalk, punctuated by broad brushstrokes and a vivid palette. Made in New Jersey, printed and stretched in Oregon.
