circle in circle necklaceby Vanessa Gade
- the story
San Francisco-based artist Vanessa Gade turns the interplay of pendant and chain into a dynamic sculptural statement. Inspired by her city's inherent dualism, marked by powerful its feats of engineering (like the Golden Gate Bridge) and its peaceful Southern Californian shorelines, Vanessa captures this rich and varied landscape in the motion and tension of her bold, kinetic pieces.
While in most necklaces, pendant and chain function independently, in Vanessa's jewelry, both pieces are integral to the form, function, and visual impact of the finished piece.
Fine chain glides freely through precisely drilled holes of a hand fabricated sterling silver circle creating an abstract pattern that is both fixed and flowing. Vanessa creates this stunning piece by interlacing a delicate, silver chain through both circles. Equal parts industrial and elegant, these interconnected elements glide gracefully with the wearer's movement giving the solid forms fluidity. The unique relationship between the different parts of Vanessa's piece emphasizes their dependency on each other in a romantic and beautiful way, evoking our deep connection and reliance on those who support us. Handmade in San Francisco, California.

- the maker
It was Vanessa's passion for history and photography that initiated her path to jewelry design. While studying to become a historian at the University of California, San Diego she volunteered to help construct the new darkroom on campus, directly adjacent to the metalsmithing studio. Fascinated by the tools, stone, and molten metal, she wandered inside and never looked back.
Bold, kinetic and sculptural with an elegant interplay of angles and curves, Vanessa Gade's jewelry makes a contemporary statement balanced with timeless style.
The diverse urban landscape of Sand Francisco provides the ideal creative backdrop for Vanessa's work and can be seen in the architectural qualities of her jewelry designs. The structural nature of her pieces is gracefully countered by a fluidity and movement influenced by her love of the ocean and her youth along the beaches of Southern California.
She describes her work as contemporary, with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic reminiscent of Japanese and Scandinavian design. Particular pieces have been inspired by everything from art deco architecture, ikebana flower arrangements, suspension bridges and even criss crossing power lines. Her designs tend toward an asymmetrical pattern encased within a perfect circle.
She enjoys the challenge of creating a perfectly balanced geometric structure that still maintains an element of movement, all the while utilizing the negative space as an integral part of the design.
