Above Board

This handsome, reusable memo board replaces that wasteful flurry of sticky notes with something timeless. Made from a reclaimed oak plank, each board has unique character and wears the marks of its lifetime of use—from a century's worth of foot traffic, to nail burn marks and boring beetle holes. The wood is sanded smooth and treated with natural tung oil, and its front surface is given a thick coat of chalkboard paint. A strip of reclaimed bicycle inner tube securely holds the included chalk pencil, for capturing your lists, notes and reminders. The board is wiped clean with a dry or damp cloth, and is ready for its next task. Handmade by Margaux and Walter Kent in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Great little tool. Can write notes for a loved one or reminders or even the menu for the night. It's a little smaller than a thought, but still good.

This Chalkboard Tablet is a great alternative to the disposable list, and we think it would look great in a kitchen, office, or near the door--listing daily reminders you don't want to overlook as you head out. How would you display this handmade reclaimed wood piece?

I really love this! I especially love the chalk-pencil as opposed to a stick of chalk. It's neater and a lot easier to write with than sticks of chalk. Plus I'm up for anything eco-friendly

Love this! I am forever using sticky notes or scrap paper for notes or grocery lists so I would love to have this a an alternative. I think this product really stands out an an uncommon good because although you would use it for common reasons, it is a creative design and not only easy to tote around if necessary, but also made from recycled items.

Does it come with extra erasers and chalk pencils? What is tung oil and what is it used for?

Erin
Vote: Thumbs up!

I love the chalk pencil! Regular chalks get my hands so dirty! I also love the materials it's made out of.

Elizabeth
Vote: Thumbs up!

I have way too many sticky notes floating around my home. This looks like a great earth-friendly way to replace them.

Zehava
Vote: Thumbs up!

I go through so many pads of paper and sticky notes at work and this would be a great product to have by my desk to jot down my to do list!

Sarah
Vote: Thumbs up!

Love this item! The size is great and love all of the recycled materials!

Jeremie
Vote: Thumbs up!

Better than a dry erase board!

Alexi

This would be cute for notes left on the fridge but impractical if you needed to put it in your purse as a grocery list.

The chaulk pencil is great, no more chalk dust !!!!!!

I love the old school look to this chalkboard tablet! Much cleaner than having sticky notes all around your home!

Erika
Vote: Thumbs up!

Nice, but it's really nothing new and different.

Vote: Thumbs up!

This is a great product! I would love to have one for myself. I love that it's made of chalk, eliminating excess paper waste. How is it attached, and how is the chalk pencil sharpened and replaced?

Linda
Vote: Thumbs up!

I do like it and the idea that is a recycled object. Personally though, I'm thinking, I could do that! Would I...hmmm Price would have to be right.

carol
Vote: Thumbs up!

A strong magnet on the back to hang on the fridge would be nice.

Jennifer
Vote: Thumbs up!

Great idea on the chalk pencil - chalk dust all over your person is such an annoyance! It seems a little small though, and with the availability of "chalkboard paint" and other items like this one, I would think for it to be competitive, it would need to be a little bigger (or come in different sizes).

Sheryl
Vote: Thumbs down!

Where am I going to get another chalk pencil and how do I sharpen this one?

amanda
Vote: Thumbs up!

Love it!

Thanks for all of the great comments so far! To answer a few questions: Yes, the chalk pencil is included. It doesn't come with a refill pencil, but we're looking in to where refills may be available. You sharpen the chalk pencil with a regular pencil sharpener, so no special tools are required. Also, tung oil is a natural oil (from tung trees) that hardens and creates a finish on the wood to keep it looking nice and prevent moisture from getting in.

For me, the whole point of the paper list is being able to then take it with me to the store. That is what I use this type of product for - write it down and then take it with me. You can't do that with this so you'd just have to write it down on something else. If you just had a dry erase board to leave notes on it though, this would be a handsome replacement for that.

GOOOO GREEEEEEN!!!!

CT Mom
Vote: Thumbs up!

The chalk pencil is a great innovation. I'd use this to leave a note for my kids or hubby, not a grocery list, that has to go in my purse, lol

Jacqueline
Vote: Thumbs down!

Love the chalk pencil idea but I normally use sticky notes so I can bring them with me to, say, the grocery store. I can't see myself lugging this around. I'd be too afraid to break it!

Donna
Vote: Thumbs up!

Interesting and saves paper - don't know how it will maintain the writing in one's pocket/pocketbook

Joanna
Vote: Thumbs down!

I hate wringing on chalkboard gives me goosebumps! :(

KATHY

GREAT IDEA!!! YOU WON'T HAVE SO MUCH PAPER TO THROW AWAY!!

Alex
Vote: Thumbs up!

Good for leaving cheerful notes when your significant other or roommate gets up way earlier than you do.

kristen
Vote: Thumbs down!

You can't really take it with you...

Brenda
Vote: Thumbs down!

Not practical to put in my purse. To small for everyone to leave notes on.

Sarah

Made in USA!

Jolan
Vote: Thumbs up!

Not only is this a great idea to save some trees but it is also a beautiful piece to have. The third plus is that it is made here in the USA. Thank you uncommon goods!

Elizabeth
Vote: Thumbs up!

I love that this has character and is made from repurposed materials. The chalk pencil is great and make it much more portable (I'm thinking grocery shopping lists tossed in my bag, etc.). My only concern is whether chalkboard paint holds up and erases well, or whether it will need more coats in the future.

Paper or iPhone for notes, chalk would erase too easily

Kat

Buying something that I could easily enough make myself doesn't seem worth buying to me.

Love the chalk pencil. Hadn't seen one of these before.

JL
Vote: Thumbs up!

Love this idea: recycled, made in the US, unique look... Can see having one in the kitchen, home office, and work office!

Kendell
Vote: Thumbs up!

Much better than wasting paper, and can have many other uses besides a shopping list. I would leave cute messages for my family members! I love this!

Kris
Vote: Thumbs up!

perfect size for in the car, for those "Oh, I need X at the store" notes. Or on the doorknob, to remind the kids/adults what to take when they leave. Love that it's recycled!

Dorothy
Vote: Thumbs down!

chalkboards r the craze, yes, but they r no longer in schools because they're messy

Kimberly K.
Vote: Thumbs up!

I think this message board is different shape and the chalkboard paint is what I like best.

Carol

It's not portable; I use my phone for notes

Christine
Vote: Thumbs up!

Recycled and made in the USA! A winner.

Amanda
Vote: Thumbs down!

You can't easily bring this grocery list with you to the store. I'll stick to keeping my lists on my phone.

Sarah

Juli

I have an App on my smart phone that does this better. I like the theory, but it's more of a novelty than anything else.

awesome, would definately buy it

Ashley
Vote: Thumbs up!

Simple and timeless! Sayonara sticky notes!

Kirsten
Vote: Thumbs up!

As someone who relies on dry erase boards, sticky pads and cork boards to get through the day, I LOVE this! It's a very elegant play on the memo pad. I can totally see myself sitting in a meeting with one of these. As a huge fan of biking, I love that it's made from inner tubes! I'll have this on my Christmas List, for sure.

Marcia
Vote: Thumbs up!

would come in very handy in alot of places

Pam
Vote: Thumbs up!

Bobbi
Vote: Thumbs up!

I would love to hang this in my kitchen!! Looks great and easy to make a quick grocery or to-do list!

Pam
Vote: Thumbs up!

So cute. I can use this to replace my paper grocery list that I always have to re-write anyway.

Lauren
Vote: Thumbs up!

Being an unorganized type who is in love with lists, this is absolutely right up my alley. I love the simple, straightforward design that would look great in any room in the house.

amanda
Vote: Thumbs up!

Although this may seem simple, it is way cooler than a little chalkboard you'd find elsewhere. The upcycled nature of this piece makes it apecial. It definitely found a place in my heart because of that.

Chantal
Vote: Thumbs down!

It's a cute idea, and I like the chalk pencil instead of the sticks of chalk.. but it's impractical for "list" purposes to take with you. Maybe it would work if it came with a pouch to put it in for travel purposes, but I'm not sure how the chalk wouldn't rub off a bit still. Like the fact that it's eco-friendly though.

Gala
Vote: Thumbs up!

this would be Great as a magnet for the refrigerator as Well

Chris
Vote: Thumbs up!

Love that it is Made in the USA!!!! It is nice to see recycled materials in anything. I like the old school look of the chalk board. It's a cute item to leave encouraging notes to kids too. Chalkboards last forever too. You can always repaint with chalkboard paint if it starts to look worn.

Alexandrea
Vote: Thumbs up!

I like that it's made from reclaimed materials- makes me feel better about buying something knowing a lot of resources weren't wasted making thousands of them.

Eugenie
Vote: Thumbs down!

Not that practical to take with me

tara
Vote: Thumbs down!

Won't fit in my purse when I go to the store. For a home memo board it would be fine but small.

valerie

the chalkboard tablet is a neat way to communicate with family.

alena
Vote: Thumbs up!

Love recycled goods, this is great and it would be great if I could finally get rid off all the clutter.

Jennifer
Vote: Thumbs up!

i would use this. Does it have a magnet on the back to keep on the fridge?

angie

would you be able to buy replacement 'chalk pencils', once this one was gone?

amber
Vote: Thumbs up!

You had me at 'replaces that wasteful flurry of sticky notes with something timeless.'

laura
Vote: Thumbs up!

So excited about this, we can keep track of our groceries that we are out of pr running low on without wasting paper. I can just put it into my app on my nook then erase it off the chalkboard! Great item for us eco friendly peeps!

Jessica
Vote: Thumbs down!

I really love the idea of this product, but how do you take your list to the grocery store with you?

Phinon
Vote: Thumbs down!

This item doesn't seem very practical or sturdy. I could possibly see it at work or if it had a hanging mechanism, maybe at home.

Lauren
Vote: Thumbs up!

I agree with other commentators that I'd like an extra chalk pencil pack.

Malorie
Vote: Thumbs down!

This is a cool concept. However, I wouldn't use this for a grocery list because it would be a pain to take with me to the store.

Aline
Vote: Thumbs down!

I like the look and the concept, but hate chalk dust and the sound of writing on chalkboards. Where will you get another chalk pencil?

Brad
Vote: Thumbs up!

Cool but I probably wouldn't use it

danielle
Vote: Thumbs up!

Great use of recycled materials. I can see using this by the phone for messages and reminders.

Kathleen
Vote: Thumbs down!

Seems like a mini-clipboard and not portable enough for my small pocketbook.

neha
Vote: Thumbs down!

So predictable not uncommon!

Dane

Very cool item, I agree with others on the idea of using a chalk pencil instead of regular chalk...

mary anne
Vote: Thumbs down!

chalk is messy!

Bridget
Vote: Thumbs up!

Would love to have this in my kitchen.

Christie
Vote: Thumbs up!

The real benefit of the (wasteful) sticky note is that you can drop it into your purse to take with you to the store. I love the look of this as well as the idea, but I'd like to know how it's hung---does it come with hardware? Can you use a magnet and take it to the store? That sort of thing!

Beth
Vote: Thumbs up!

Cute

Like! The chalk pencil is terrific. Overall, seems like a very well made product with many applications.

Ann
Vote: Thumbs up!

Great idea. Can additional chalk pencils be purchased? Love that it is made in USA,

Carol

What a clever product! Definitely adds charm to usually mundane reminder/to-do lists. Seems to be very thoughtfully created in a "green" way.

Vote: Thumbs down!

It's attractive, but looks like it would be less useful than the old paper systems.

Heather
Vote: Thumbs up!

Would be better than using sticky notes.

Sarah
Vote: Thumbs down!

Cute idea, but I cant really take that to the store without messing it up and what about when the pencil runs out?

Megan
Vote: Thumbs up!

I like having a common place where people can write each other notes and this chalkboard looks much more classy than the white board I have on my fridge. Made in the USA always a thumbs up.

Robin
Vote: Thumbs up!

I would consider this as a gift for those folks on my list who are hard to buy for - cute, useful, different. It would depend on price.

Amy
Vote: Thumbs up!

You should change the example text in the picture to a reminder (i.e. Call Dad, Pick up dry cleaning) or a message (Have a great day, Lily!) instead of a grocery list. When I see a grocery list here I think, this is a bad idea - I'm going to have to re-write the whole list to go to the store!

Carolyn
Vote: Thumbs up!

Would help to know price point. Are chalk pens available separately for continued use? Otherwise, it's a potentially short lived item...

Kathryn

It's the chalk pencil that sells it. More fun and stylish than a dry erase board.

Paula

I really like this idea. Thumbs up!

Susan

I love the chalk pencil idea!
