CERAMIC FERN BIRDHOUSES

All-Natural Habitat

Simple, elegant proportions and soft sky and earth tones are for the birds--the lucky ones who build their nest in one of these lovely, hand-thrown, glazed porcelain birdhouses created by artist Shelly Cubarney.

Cubarney presses fern leaves from the woods near her Pennsylvania studio into the clay while it’s still wet, and stains the resulting impression with manganese oxide extracted from polluted mine runoff and recycled into a 100% safe ceramic glaze. A small twig is used for the perch. Comfortable for cavity-dwelling birds, sturdy to last outdoors, and beautiful for you to look at, each one is a unique work of art.

Wire cable hanger included; birdhouse can be hung from a tree or under an eave, or set on a fence post. Rubber plug on bottom is removable for easy cleaning. Handmade in Pennsylvania.

  • Item ID: 21747
  • Materials: wire, rubber, wood, glaze, porcelain
  • 5" W x 6" H
  • Care instructions: hand wash in sink with dish soap.

These unique birdhouses are hand-pressed with real foliage. What kind of impression do they leave on you?

I think these are neat

Don

These are cool but also breakable if they fell. What is the price as well?

Depending on the price of the real estate, I would nest here in a heart beat! In fact I'd buy more than one and start my own neighborhood. Key word being price. These are exceptional pieces!

Kathy

nice look and good to have a plug for cleaning. How big is the plug to clean out a nest? I don't think I'd recommend it sitting on a fence post - could get broken or other critters in it.

Love these, curious about the price. I have 4 wren houses up now and would change them out in a heart beat with these ~ if affordable.

maria

I gave thumbs down because no price for a breakable item.

appears to be good quality and good design, although looks like they would break easily. i wouldn't buy them though because it is not a good idea to feed birds. It makes them unable to find their own food if they are feed from a feeder

I like the design, plus the fact that there is a removable plug for cleaning out the interior.

Nancy

I think these birdhouses would be a lot more warm than wooden ones are since they have no cracks that wind, rain, etc. can enter through. Also they are stylish and love the colors.

Nancy

Would love to see these in my backyard!

Karen

These cute little birdhouses are the bomb!!

Thanks for the question, Kathy. The opening for cleaning is 2 inches in diameter.

Maybe too small and breakable, - also feeding birds is OK, especially in the winter. It is a fallacy to think that they will top finding their own foods.

I kept reading until I saw there was a plug in the bottom so they can be cleaned. The ability to keep our feathered friends' homes tidy is important. I was a little squeamish about the glaze being made from polluted mine runoff but the description says it is now a safe ceramic glaze. Is it?

Why can't we see the price anymore?

I would have to know more about what birds actually would nest in these. Quite frankly, they look too good, too pristine, to be usable. Now if the pix featured a bird a tually using one that would bea different story.

These are truly beautiful, with nature as their inspiration.

too fragile for real use

I'm the artist who creates these and have several hanging in my trees. They are very strong and serve the chickadee and wrens in my area very well. Thanks for your nice comments.

Good idea. Few artists use natural items. Previous items from this artist have been durable and seldom break when dropped. Birds will love them.

They are cute but I'm just not into bird feeders.

These are adorable, and what bird wouldn't want to raise their young in them.
