Ripe with Appeal
Artist Melanie Mckenney finds her inspiration in nature - not the typical flowers and trees, but in the abundant textures and colors of ordinary fruits and vegetables.
In these sturdy, earthenware bowls she has captured the sweetness of a ripe cantaloupe melon. She created a slip-cast mold from an actual fruit to recreate the detailed texture of its familiar, nubbly rind. The inner surface is smooth and makes a perfect bowl for cereal, fruit, or summery treats. Mckenney finishes off her delicious creation with food-safe, non-toxic glazes that dish out the delectable coloring of the edible original. Dishwasher safe. Not recommended for microwave, oven or stovetop. Handmade in Tonawanda, New York.
Due to handmade nature of the product, each is one-of-a-kind and will vary.
- Item ID: 21088
- Materials: earthenware, food-safe glaze
- 2.5" H x 5.25" dia.
- These bowls are dishwasher safe but not recommended for microwave.
Melanie Mckenney
Melanie Mckenney originally hails from Buffalo, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from nearby Alfred University in 2006, but continued her training through numerous workshops, including study at the Studio Arts Centers International in Florence, Italy. Melanie helped to run a non-profit ceramics program in Lexington, MA, before returning to Buffalo, where she lives with her husband, daughter, and two dogs.
Melanie finds the inspiration for her functional pottery in nature, and believes that capturing those natural forms in clay evokes a new appreciation for everyday objects. Often taken for granted, fruits and vegetables display a rich variety of shapes, colors, and textures. By casting directly from the actual fruit or vegetable, Melanie is able to capture these in detail. Her line of Vegetabowlsc has been in production since 2010, and she hopes to promote local farming, healthy eating, and an appreciation for handmade housewares. See

Artist Melanie Mckenney's new bowls look good enough to eat! Maybe it's because she casts them from actual fruit. Would you serve up fresh fruit in these cool cantaloupe bowls?

things are often very pricey at Uncommon Goods. just hoping this is a necessity and not a huge, huge profit margin.

This is very unique and can work across settings, but the price is a bit steep.

Thanks for the comment, C! Some of our products do cost a bit more than the mass-produced items you find elsewhere, but please keep in mind that this is because handmade items require the artist's time and effort. These bowls are made by Melanie Mckenney, who creates the pieces from a mold of an actual cantaloupe. The price accounts not only for the cost of materials, but also allows for Melanie to make a fair wage.

Too expensive, come on, $40 for 2 lousy little bowls? They are really cool and original though. I'm sure many other financially equipped people won't mind shelling out the dough for these fruit bowls.

cute, but pricey, I can eat fruit out of a less expensive bowl. If you entertain regularly it would be a good investment as an interesting serving piece. Do like the fact that it is manufactured stateside.
