Hooked on Cycling
What better place to hang your gear when you come in from a bike ride than on this sturdy storage rack. Designer Gilbert VandenHeuvel is an avid cyclist who loves incorporating reclaimed bicycle parts into his furniture and decorative art pieces. Here he flips bicycle brake levers upside down, giving them new life as coat hooks. The aluminum levers are naturally light-weight and sturdy, and they are mounted on a background of bicycle gears that impart a "starbust" playfulness to the piece. Handmade in Canada.

My inspiration comes from the bicycle itself. They are almost begging to be reborn, reshaped into something surprising and beautiful. A bicycle lends itself well to re-purposing: the sexy sprockets, curvy rims, flexible rubber, and sturdy frame make for endless design possibilities. With no formal art or design education, all my pieces are raw imagination with practical structural design all mixed together with my love of bicycles. In the beginning, I started out using only the metal parts of the bike, but I never threw away the other parts since I knew I would use them somehow, someday. Now I'm expanding my design range by weaving, sewing and arranging the tires and inner tubes. collection
