Bonsai Specimen Gardens

Needle, Leaf & Blossom

The ancient Japanese practice of growing bonsai trees is both an art and a form of meditation. These three kits each come in a sleek, steel box, and include everything you need to start growing your own beautiful bonsai tree. Each plant by itself is a natural wonder, but together they form a complete forest panorama in miniature.

Gardenia (Gardenia Jasminoides) is one of the easiest bonsai trees to grow. It's known for its white, richly scented flowers that bloom in the late spring.

The Grey Elm (Zelkova serrata) has sweeping, delicate branches. Its small, serrated leaves turn orange and gold as they mark the transition to autumn.

The striking Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) has a rugged, twisting form and clusters of needles that remain green through the winter.

Planting boxes made in US from recycled steel. Ribbon made in US from recycled plastic bottles. Kit contains tree seed, organic growing medium and bonsai scissors.

Good idea in theory

Comments about Bonsai Specimen Gardens:

For the price I would hope to receive something a little more substantial, with enough soil to fill the grow box. Overall it's a cool idea, but too gimmicky to be practical for bonsai keeping.

Comments about Bonsai Specimen Gardens:

My boyfriend was very impatient to have to wait the 60 or so possible days to see the beginnings of his black pine. He is not and avid gardener at all (I am), but very crafty so I purchased this for him as a birthday gift. He planted his seeds according to the instructions (he was SO nervous) and went on a week trip a few days later... when he got home, 4 of 7 seeds were already shooting up strong. Can't wait to see how he does with them. He's so excited to get wiring and wants to go to a pottery studio to make his own bonsai pots. He's hooked! Thank-you.

I have two thriving black pines from one pack of seeds. I had even more sprouts, but not all survived. They sprouted, if I remember correctly, in about 4-6 weeks. Maybe people are planting the seeds too deep?

        I'm Waiting!!!

        Comments about Bonsai Specimen Gardens:

I'm sorry, but following the directions faithfully produced nothing from this expensive Bonsai Tree Christmas present which I received in 2011.

Yes, the packaging was very good, but unimportant when the item does not create a Gardinia plant as expected.

I am very disappointed that the seeds didn't germinate. I guess I am in good company as shown by a number of the reviewers on this page who had the same problem.

        What now??

I received this as a gift from my girlfriend. Having followed the instructions perfectly, I am really disappointed that the seeds didn't sprout. Definitely wouldn't recommend this product. Too expensive for it to simply not work.

The overall kit is very nice. I am still waiting to see how well the seeds germinate and my bonsai grows. I am looking forward to having a very special accent to my home. I did not give it a 5 star as I have not had it long enough to see how it actually grows.

              Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was very quick. It was well packaged and in perfect condition when it arrived.

                Comments about Bonsai Specimen Gardens:

I received my gardenia bonsai and was very pleased with the way it was packaged, as well as the planter itself. I planted the seeds and have been careful to follow the instructions, but I have yet to see any sprouts. I had planned to give the plant to my Mom - she loves gardenias. This is the first time I've tried to grow a bonsai, and it hasn't encouraged me at all.
