Windblown Art

Create a peaceful respite indoors or out with this Calder-inspired copper mobile by artist Jay Jones. Inspired by the tree-lined streets of his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina, Jones casts real ginkgo and maple leaves to create his elegant copper mobiles. He hammers each leaf by hand and torches the edges to bring out subtle hues of amber, gold, saffron, and lavender. He suspends the finished leaves on slender steel arms that twirl gracefully with the slightest breeze. As the mobile turns, the autumnal leaves flutter just so, catching the sun's rays at various angles and casting glimmers around it. Handmade in North Carolina.

Calmness moves Jay Jones. “I find that I’m most inspired when I’m in a museum,” he says. “Most of the time, I’m bombarded by noise and distractions. Museums are usually cool and quiet places.” That sense of stillness—and gentle movement—is reflected in his delicate copper mobiles. Jay’s pieces have been known to have a nearly hypnotic effect. “I was participating in a gift show when a girl of 5 or 6 came into my booth and just stood there looking at my work,” says the Greensboro-based artist. When her mother said she liked the mobiles too but didn’t know where they would put one in their home, Jay recalls, “The young girl said without hesitation, ‘Don’t worry Mom, the house will tell you where it needs to go.’”
