- the maker
Designer and founder Ella Vickers' voyage to the creation of EVRSC began while serving as first mate on the sailing yacht Columbia, the first 12-meter vessel to win the America's cup. Ella saw untapped potential in the yacht's discarded sails and drew upon her creativity and training to design a handful of unique, attractive and practical recycled sailcloth bags. Ella Vickers, Inc. and the Ella Vickers Recycled Sailcloth Collection was born.
Ella began sailing as a child, learning on her family's boats off the coast of her native North Carolina. During those early years, her great grandmother taught her to sew on her antique sewing machine. She would later tie the two threads of sailing and sewing together, apprenticing at a marine canvas shop where she learned pattern making and perfected her sewing skills.
Ella Vickers Inc. has been creating quality marine canvas products since 1989. She started her business with no money- after receiving a business degree at a local NC college- relying on credit cards to fund her small enterprise. Today the company owns a small factory at their headquarters in Wrightsville Beach, NC and employs another 20 workers in Brooklyn, NY, closer to EVRSC's flagship store in Greenwich, CT.
The EVRSC collection has received acclaim among the boating crowd while the broad appeal of the versatile bags and home accessories has garnered attention from publications ranging from InStyle Magazine to Town and Country to Forbes. Ella's career is a study in focused creativity as well as steadfast courage- a strength acquired by necessity after her mother died in a car accident when Ella was 11. "It made me appreciate everything deeply and it carries through to everything I do," collection
