Melissa Youngleson

Originally from South Brooklyn, I started my career in art and design doing photography. This eventually evolved into graphic design and production management for street wear apparel brands in NYC that lasted over a decade. I decided to slow down the pace of life and moved to Hawaii in 2008, where my aesthetic slowly changed from the edgy, sarcastic and sometimes slightly vulgar design style to something more optimistic and beauty driven. I started working with a renowned traditional Hawaiian quilter, helping to develop her design patterns into a book collection. I am a math geek, so I was excited by the symmetry and geometrics of the process. I thought creating a beautiful quilted pillow that incorporated my street style with a traditional art would truly produce something unique. This was the beginning of a series that takes non-traditional motifs and marries them into this beautiful quilting technique.
