- the story
Pop Open A Coaster
A nod to Americana, these rubber coasters by Josh Jakus are inspired by the conventional 6-pack. Just pop out the individual coasters for use, then put them back in the ring for storage. Recycled materials make them perfect for the modern, eco-conscious consumer. Gray rubber is 30% post-industrial waste rubber. Black rubber is 100% recycled tires. Handmade in the USA. Sold as a set of six coasters in gray or black.

- the maker
Josh Jakus is a Berkeley, California-based designer dedicated to making experiential connections between form and function. When a person uses one of his products, they naturally encounter the way it was conceived and developed. Achieving such connections requires a strict material sensibility--using materials in their simplest form so intrinsic qualities show through, and a rigorous design efficiency that strives to get the most impact out of the fewest moves.
Josh founded his design practice in 2005 as a way of continuing his lifelong interest in the nature of structure, space and materials. Though his design practice is driven more by intellectual curiosity than pragmatism, Josh is still happiest making things that are meant to be used. An architect by training with an Masters of Architecture from UC Berkeley, Josh uses his understanding of the built environment and how it is inhabited to inform his designs, and he hopes his products will help foster a more intuitive understanding of all objects in the people who use them.

Comments about 6-PACK RUBBER COASTERS:
Other than being recycled rubber, Jakus' coasters were not practical or even very "green." They did not "pop out" of the holder; they had to be cut out and certainly could not be stored in the holder, unless that meant the holder would be flat on a table and they would be placed inside the holes again--one couldn't pick up coasters and holder as a unit after they were detached the first time. Other than the useless, gimmicky "holder" that doesn't, the coasters work as coasters. [...]
Service and delivery comments:
The coasters came packaged in a great deal of wrapping and stuffing, inside a big box. Good grief! They're RUBBER! They could have been shipped in a padded envelope!
