Earthy and warm, these exquisitely hand crafted necklaces by Jessie Alon are created using a technique called Terrazzo, which is Italian for terrace.
The origins of Terrazzo can be traced back to 15th century Italy. Venetian craftsmen had discovered an innovative use for small remnants of marble chips left over from the studios of local sculptors: they would combine the marble with mortar to create beautiful terraces.
In that same tradition, these necklaces are cast from a mixture of reclaimed marble and recycled glass. Additional color and texture are added by layering natural elements such as river rock and semi-precious stones. It is during the polishing process, as the marble and glass are being exposed, that the piece begins to come alive. I ordered the green one as a stocking stuffer for my wife. I am embarrassed to even show it to her as it looks nothing like the picture in the catalog. There is no luster, and the color is not at all like the picture. It looks like any old stone from my backyard. No wonder they just dropped the price. I'll be returning it ASAP...
