Too complicated-scarf is easier choice.
By Jen from New York State on 2/14/2008
Pros:
Fun, Good Color Variety, High Quality
Cons:
Confusing
Best Uses:
Creative Projects
Describe Yourself:
Collector, Enthusiast, Parent
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about MOO-SHU MITT KNITTING KITS:

[...]I might even be brave enough to try this again. I'm not sure who this project is supposed to be for, as the tiny & confusing directions make them worthless to a knitting novice, even one who's "crafty," and knitting experts already have their own favorite needles and patterns. I'm sure the scarf product would be a great choice for a novice--the "how to knit" directions are fine, but they lost me with the complicated mitten pattern described in secret code.

I should have guessed that this wouldn't be something for a novice knitter to figure out. I was super excited to get this and now that I have it, it is sitting on a shelf. I am turned off by the instructions- they look so be hard. However, as I said, I an new to this knitting-thing. They may be great if you know what you are doing.

Comments about MOO-SHU MITT KNITTING KITS:

These looked so cute that I bought 5 of them to give them out as Christmas gifts. Since I always wanted to learn how to knit, I even set one box aside for myself. I opened the box this weekend to start my mittens, I was shocked to find a ball of yarn, two sticks and no directions!! The packaging around the box looked like it was opened and retaped. Now I'm worried that the others I gave as gifts didn't have directions either! What a waste of money!!

Comments about MOO-SHU MITT KNITTING KITS:

I bought this for my 12 year old niece for Christmas. She is a beginning knitter, but her Mom, Grandma and I all knit. She was quite excited and right away asked me to help get her started. Here is what we found:\n1. There is no picture of the finished mitt. She has seen this in the catalog so she knew what it was, but if this was given to someone unfamiliar with the catalog, they would not know what they were making.\n2. While the bamboo needles add to the 'Chinese takeout' theme, the yarn does not slide easily on them. Several times, she had to pull on the stitches to move them along the needle and accidentally pulled several right off the needle.\n3. The instructions really could be better written. They were condensed to fit the size of a 3x4 note card. The instructions for the zigzag pattern and double increase and double decrease are immediately following the row instructions, but not bold or italic to call attention to them, so unless you read through the whole thing first, you would not know what they were talking about. What excited 12 year old reads the whole thing first? After the cast on and first row it says to 'work 2 rows of zigzag pattern. work row 1 of zigzag pattern - xx stitches'. We thought this meant that after knitting the first row there would be xx stitches. When we went further and found that we did not have the right number of stitches, we figured out that what we were supposed to do was knit 3 rows of zigzag pattern - row 1, row 2, row 1. Would it have cost them that much more to spell this out? We never did figure out exactly what the SSL stitch was but decided that knit 2 together accomplished the same thing. After the zigzag pattern it says to purl everyother row. While it is very clear what this means, it is one more thing for a beginning knitter to think about. If they had written explicit instructions for row 1, row 2, row 3 . . . the beginner could easily keep track of where she was. Or if she lost track, she could count the rows she had done and know right where to pick up. If a beginner has to do too much figuring out, she is likely to give up on knitting.\n4. We didn't get this far in the knitting yet, but I saw a reference to using a stitch holder for the thumb and it is not included in the kit. They could have added that to the product description so that anyone giving this as a gift could buy one - or they could have included one!\n\nIf I find that there were more problems when she gets further along, I'll add them later.
