UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE: Jack was a bitter old man who constantly played tricks on everyone, including the devil. When he died, according to Irish legend he was not admitted to heaven or hell, so he had to roam the earth with nowhere to go. He lit his way with an ember that the devil had given him, which he held in a carved-out turnip, earning the name "Jack-o'-Lantern" and starting a long tradition. When Irish immigrants arrived in America they could not find enough turnips, so they used pumpkins instead, and pumpkins are still used to this day.
