Mae Jemison
Dr. Mae C. Jemison’s career reached astounding heights, and very few have ever gone higher than she has, as an astronaut conducting experiments for the joint American-Japanese mission SPACELAB J. Born in Decatur, Alabama and raised in Chicago, she graduated from Stanford in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Studies. She went on to medical school and received her MD from Cornell University, traveling to Cuba, Kenya and Thailand along the way to provide primary medical care to people living there. Following medical school she served in the Peace Corps, working in Sierra Leone and Liberia, supervising pharmacy, laboratory and medical staff. After returning, she applied to become an astronaut with NASA, and in 1992 her space shuttle blasted off to take her into space for the SPACELAB J mission.
