Larry Doby
Months after Jackie Robinson became the first black player in the National League in 1947, Larry Doby became the first African-American in the American League and received the same treatment – aggressive and obscene taunts, fastballs flying past his head and discrimination at every step. The outfielder never lost his self-control, though, and along with Robinson paved the way for more Negro League players to join the majors. In 1948 he overcame the abuse and, along with Leroy “Satchel” Paige – a legend considered by many to be the greatest pitcher of all time but a rookie at 42 years old because the Majors had only just been integrated – led the Cleveland Indians past the Yankees and Red Sox to defeat the Boston Braves in the World Series and win the championship. He is now in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
