Melissa Schooley

Artist Bio

Melissa Schooley grew up on an apple orchard in Southern Ontario. After a few false starts in university trying her hand at science and then social science, Melissa headed to Vancouver, BC to pursue a visual arts degree at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Upon completion of her degree in 2002, Melissa moved back to Ontario and set up her studio in a barn on her parents farm. She has been potting full time since 2006 and sells her work in shops and galleries across Canada, the United States and abroad.

As a ceramic artist working with porcelain, she have a very strong interest in function. She strives to make pieces that are not only intended for use, but perform their functions well. "I enjoy playing with color, specifically how colors work with each other and how they play with the emotions of the user. I am interested not only in the visual appeal of functional objects, but also how they interact with their users: the feel of the glaze against skin, the size of the bowl in a hand, the ease with which a teapot pours, the feel of a cup's rim against the lip" - these are all considerations taken into account when she is creating a piece.
