There’s no shortage of beautiful scenery in Napa Valley. But when longtime wine enthusiast Bob Yates moved to northern California, his eye honed in not on the lush valleys or panoramic vistas, but on the heaps of weathered wine barrels he spotted during winery visits. “There should be a way to transform these discarded barrels to get more use from the many trees that were destroyed to make them,” he thought.
And so he created one, channeling a 30-year woodworking hobby to turn end-of-life wine barrels into a line of home goods. “I wanted to make something that would respect nature and the wood that had been harvested,” he says. To this end, his designs–which range from barrel tables to flight staves–are both decorative and functional. “I want people to use and enjoy them,” he says, “not just look at them.”
