Tim Wirth

Artist Bio

Tim Wirth creates double-sided square paintings that explore color, shape, and imagery in deceptively simple ways. His distinctive craftsmanship and exploration of tension, intrigue, and humor have captured the interest of various collectors and critics, including The Brooklyn Rail founder/publisher Phong Bui, renowned art scholar and historian Karen Wilkin, and the legendary singer/songwriter John Mellencamp. His work is featured in public and private collections across the country and has been exhibited internationally.

"I like things like rock piles, cars stored in corncribs, and dogs running in ditches," says Wirth. "I like the imagery of those things but I also like the attitude of those things. Sometimes I like the attitude better than I like the picture. Sometimes I just like the picture."

He grew up on a farm in rural Iowa. He began studying art at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa and then continued at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia where he received his MFA in painting. His studio and workshop are currently located in the flat lands of northern Iowa where he lives with his wife and children.
