Thomas Paul was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in textile design. He got his start in the design world in the fashion business. First as an intern at DKNY, then as the head colorist for a silk mill specializing in neckwear and scarves. There he worked on developing neckwear collections for designer names including: Bill Blass, Oscar De la Renta, Calvin Klein, and DKNY. This eventually led to the creation of a neckwear collection under his own label. From this was born the start of the thomaspaul pillow collection, launched in 2001, which was originally conceived of to utilize the silk prints in his tie collection for throw pillows. The pillows made from the silk tie fabrics were an immediate hit.
Since then the line has steadily expanded into other categories apart from silk pillows to include tabletop, stationary, rugs, lighting, fabrics, and wall art. The ultimate goal being to have products covering every aspect of the home, all with thomaspaul patterns gracing them.
Thomas was recently asked to contribute to the exhibiton Fragiles, which was organized by the German publisher Gestalten. The exhibition focuses on cutting edge designs in porcelain, glass, and ceramics. A special collection of porcelain plates featuring designs from his melamine collection has been produced especially for the exhibition. The work has subsequently been published in the book Fragiles. The exhibition debuted at Art Basel Miami in 2007 and has since traveled to Belgium and will soon open in Dubai.
Thomas's work has also been published in the book Simply Pattern, showcasing the best of graphic and pattern design from around the world. Since then the line has steadily expanded into other categories apart from silk pillows to include tabletop, stationary, rugs, lighting, fabrics, and wall art.
