Yael Avraham
|
Because Yael Avraham created her heart flag necklace before September 11th, she was shocked by the sudden poignant relevance of the piece. Yael is grateful that the necklace has taken on a broader meaning for her and many others.
For a month after the tragedy, Yael didn't work on her jewelry. She was unable to think about making money, and only decided to attend a craft show in order to raise money for donations.
Yael, who moved to New York almost eleven years ago from Israel, was astounded at the compassion of New Yorkers as they came together to support one another. She said, "I think the people here are beautiful. Before, I met a lot of people in their own cocoons. After September 11th, I felt that they reached out."
As the artisan behind the fledgling, New York City-based company (2001 marks its third year), Yael is infinitely respectful of the Earth for its natural gifts and beauty. She hopes that the delicate and unique qualities of her jewelry reflect that attitude. Yael combines hearty metals and delicate stones to create beautiful representations of the stunning imperfections found in the natural world. She works with such primary materials as pewter, sterling silver, and natural shaped gemstones. Each raw stone is hand-picked and hand-polished using basic sculpting and jewelry tools as well as household items. Since no two natural stones are identical, each piece is also unique.
Yael constantly explores the healing powers of minerals. She believes that stones are inherently filled with knowledge, and consequently are useful and friendly to those who wear them. Her necklaces and bracelets promote calmness, stress relief, tranquility, and inner balance-- something we could all use more of during these trying times.
